Occupational Therapy – is a client-centred health profession concerned with enabling people of all ages to participate meaningfully in the activities of everyday life. The Occupational Therapist works with her client, who may have physical or cognitive challenges, to support his or her ability to engage in the occupation he or she wishes to pursue.
While one might be inclined to think that only adults have occupations, a child’s main occupation is, in fact, engaging in the world around him or her, through playful learning and meaningful relationship building. For some children, however, this powerful occupation is hampered by sensory, physical or cognitive challenges. When a child shows delays in mastering activities typical for their age, or resorts to unusual or disruptive behaviour, the Occupational Therapist is a key health care professional with whom to make contact.
An Occupational Therapists can evaluate the underlying skills needed for playing, school performance, and activities of daily living, in order to support children in developing the skills and confidence needed in order for them to flourish.
