Therapies: DIR Floortime

DIRFloortime-Logo

Floortime is a therapeutic intervention that uses the power of relationship and respectful, joyful human connection to promote engagement, communication, positive behaviour and independent thinking; in order to optimally stimulate an individual’s developmental growth.

It is based on the DIR® model developed by Dr. Stanley Greenspan and Dr. Serena Wieder, and can be done by parents, family, or professionals caring for individuals with developmental challenges. It is a way of communicating with and responding to children and adults of all ages, that encourages them to initiate and interact in the world around them in a meaningful way.

Many of the approaches traditionally used with children rely on adult-led experiences. In Floortime, the adult participates in the child’s learning process, facilitating their sense of mastery and thus promoting the child’s own desire to seek new experiences and reach out to others.

The 3 main principles are:

Following a child’s lead – Joining their world and using the activities that interest them and give them pleasure, to harness their inner motivation to interact with the world (even if it is initially just a repetitive, stimulatory action).

Expanding their interest (without taking control) to encourage reciprocal communication, problem solving and creative thinking.

Challenging them to move up the “developmental ladder” which describes developing levels of Functional Emotional Developmental Capacities.

The DIR® model forms the foundation for the Floortime approach.

D

The “D” refers to the developmental milestones, defined as Functional Emotional Developmental Capacities, that Dr. Greenspan describes in his model.  These milestones are part of normal development but may be delayed or restricted due to a variety of challenges. Mastery of these stages is essential for all children, not only for emotional development but also for cognitive development and higher-level thinking. There are 6 primary stages and 3 advanced stages.

The first 6 stages are listed below:

  1. Self-regulation and interest in the world
  2. Intimacy, or engagement in human relations
  3. Two-way communication
  4. Complex communication
  5. Emotional ideas
  6. Emotional thinking

DIR Floortime does not specifically address language, motor or cognitive skills in isolation, but promotes the development of these skills through emotional development.

I

The “I” refers to the Individual Differences that each unique child presents: their sensory profile, their expressive and receptive language development, their visual-spatial processing, and their gross and fine motor skills. The DIR® model uses the strengths the individual has, while supporting and encouraging growth in those areas that present challenges.

Understanding each child’s unique sensory profile is critical to this process. By providing children with the sensory inputs they need and limiting the sensory inputs they are sensitive to, we can help children maintain a state of sensory regulation that supports interaction with their environment.

R

Finally, the “R” refers to the key role that trusting, positive relationships play in drawing children into the world of joyful interaction and growth. Every member of the family can play a part in this exciting approach! It is never about the child in isolation.

Sensory Integration

A Floortime provider is trained to help families identify each child’s individual differences and the developmental level they are currently functioning on.  They then guide the caregivers in using their unique relationship with the child to encourage the child’s growth and movement up the developmental ladder.
